Explain Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). Also, discuss GLOF mitigation strategy with special reference to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) guidelines.
Main Body
Glacial lake outburst flood GLOF arises the purpose of the lake entity is formed by glacial action. This can be due to excessive rainfall or inundation of the ground of lake. Reasons for GLOF: (1) Filtation of surface of lake → reduces water melting capacity of the lake. (2) extreme weather event over a short period offline (3) Cloudbursts can also trigger floods. (4) Encroachment of the boundary of the lakes.
Mitigation strategy: (1) Prevents erosion by sinners. (2) Remove the settlements near lake. (3) House and other structures to build on an upgraded platform. (4) Increase the capacity of lakes to hold more water, like hemming inundation from time to time.
