The 'seven sisters' of North Eastern region continue to remain shielded from India's growth of trade and industries. (Map showing NER with West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram) [Issues faced] 1) Terrain related challenges hampering industries growth i.e. mountains, forest, heavy rainfall, shifting rivers meghalaya brahmaputra 2) Poor infrastructure → due to historic neglect and 'development deficit' 3) Lack of integrated development approach i.e. North Eastern Zone council not functioned, State governments not forming policy to attract industry 4) Lack of Skilled workers → agriculture in focus and 'way of life', tribal dominance 5) Insurgency issues (internal security threat) → causing fear to establish companies 6) Market development poor → demand less so trade not developed. 7) Corruption in administration → ease of doing business poor, led sapim duty companies 8) 'Resource curse' → huge resources but not able to leverage as 'strategic' thinking not there 9) Border area → so important companies cannot be established.
not forming policy to attract industry Steps taken → Effectiveness 1) Creation of MODNER (Ministry of Development of North East region) 2) UDAN Yojane (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik → for cheap flights) and Krishi UDAN for movement of goods 3) Infrastructure creation → Bhupren Hazarika Setu connection Assam-Arunachal, Dhubd-Sadiya (National Waterways 2) 4) Border Village development programme 5) Education and Vocational Skilling through schemes like 'Ektanya', Nai Udaan etc. Largely effective scheme and have led to attraction of industries and creating growth in North East → But more steps needed like → - Joining North East with ASEAN by BIMSTEC, ZMT highway, kaladan project - Incentivize companies for setting inputs by 'tax holidays', SEZ (Baba Kalyani Committee). - Hydro Developmental district i.e 'Road to New India must pass through North East'
