Initiatives taken: (1) FASTER - for swift transfer of bail orders, form lowels to prison. (2) Virtual hearings - During Covid, SC, HC & sub-ordinate judiciary used video conferencing. (3) Upgradation of infrastructure like digital facilities & conferencing ch via Central Sponsored Scheme for Judicial Infrastructure. (4) SUSPACE for document disposition (5) e-Council project
Challenges faced: (1) Lack of supporting infrastructure - 73% of courts have no video conferencing. (2) Operational issues due to difficult for judge to transition. (3) 90% of funds under CSS for Judicial infra unutilised. (4) Lack of supporting ecosystem across prisons & criminal justice system transformed (5) e Committee of SC recommends edify & algorithm-based hybrid petitions allocation & traversing government → Creation of National Judicial Infrastructure Authority (NJAC) & 'ease of Justice' is the need of the hour.
